Kyneton Backyard Growers Launched

On Sunday 3rd March 2024 the new project group of Kyneton Transition Hub, Kyneton Backyard Growers, launched its weekly Fruit and Veg Share at the Kyneton Lion's Community Stall (aka kiosk or pavillion). There was an amazing array of Kyneton-grown produce; apples, nashi, herbs, rhubarb, silverbeet, spinach, tomatoes, spring onions, beetroot, potatoes, squash, zucchini, garlic and more!

The idea for KBYG (pronounced kay big) started with MRSG members and locals Giovanni Giordano and Lenka Thompson with the aim of bringing Kyneton gardeners together to share their growing knowledge and donate their homegrown produce to the rest of our community for free - the idea was quickly taken up by 7 other local growers which then blossomed to 15 growers by the time the launch arrived. These Kyneton residents all enjoy growing fresh fruit and vegetables and sharing it with our community.  One of the Kyneton growers, Isabel Mettler says

"It just makes me so happy to share food with other people. It creates a community. People don't feel lonely and we get to eat yummy healthy earthly gifts whilst meeting new folk and learning more about gardening and taking care of the earth and each other."

The growers also visit each others' plots and help out with gardening jobs when a grower calls, and if you can't make the Share but would like some produce, please reach out and they can arrange to have a bag dropped off at your place. KBYG is always on the lookout for more land to grow in, or local growers to donate, or local receivers to take the produce.

If you would like to be a part of this initiative please email kynetonbackyardgrowers@gmail.com, or call Giovanni 0418 997 015 or Lenka 0425 786 377 they would love to hear from you, or look for their Facebook and Instagram pages.

KBYG's Fruit and Veg Share is every Sunday 10am-12pm at the Kyneton Lion's Community Stall, if you have produce to share please drop it off between 9am-10am. All remaining produce goes to either the Kyneton Community House or the Kyneton Food Bank.
