Renovating the Chicken Coop

The chickens in our permaculture precinct perform an important function: they attack pests, weeds and disease in situ. Foraging under our fruit trees the chickens transform grubs, weeds, fallen fruit, lunchbox ‘gifts’ from the kindergarten next door and herbal ‘peck’ to a nitrogen rich deposit amongst the deep litter of the orchard mulch creating a slow release fertiliser.

Renovation and maintenance of the chicken coop ensures that our hens are healthy and safe from predators, it also provides the very best environment for the people and plants that share that space. We have used donated labour and materials to reduce our local waste footprint and participate in this vibrant community of shared sustainable successes. Come and see our coop and its new residents (Milly, Molly and Amanda) at the Macedon Ranges Sustainability Festival this March 2nd.
