We have our new bins in the Macedon Ranges and across Victoria other Councils are following suit. The Australian recycling industry is getting a much-needed overhaul. So are we nearly there yet? Let’s take a closer look.

Australian Paper Recovery are the new recycling contractors on the block, now taking our glass-free recycling. Here is an article from Waste Management Review from December last year introducing this innovative Australian company who want to play a key role in developing a circular economy.

Meanwhile, we eagerly wait for the Victorian Government’s Circular Economy Policy, which was due at the end of last year. The Waste Action Group will be paying particular attention to what the policy says about a container deposit scheme, waste-to-energy incinerators and whether the policy supports the Australia Packaging Covenant Organisation’s targets for 100% recycled, recyclable or compostable packaging for all Australian goods by 2025.

Lastly, New Zealand has been setting a course for a circular economy since 2018. This makes sense for a small country with very limited landfill capacity. How they actually achieve their goals will be a useful measure for other countries wanting to head in the same direction.
