Australia’s population will grow from 22 to 36 million by 2050, which means that 6.5 million new housing units will be required in the next 35 years. We need new housing that integrates access to transport, employment and services, including meeting the needs of Australia’s ageing society and families who want to be located close to cities. Nightingale buildings aim to deliver multi-residential housing in cities that is environmentally sustainable, financially affordable and socially inclusive: apartments designed with a focus on residents’ needs.

Last year Melbourne-based Austin Maynard Architects held an information night and conducted feasibility studies and a survey to explore the potential for Nightingale housing in Bendigo - the first proposed regional Nightingale development.

30-minute public tours of the multi-award-winning “Nightingale 1” in Brunswick are held on various Thursdays throughout the year. A Nightingale expert outlines the history, ethos, construction, design and technical features of Nightingale 1.
